Heckler & Koch USP .40 Compact

HK USP .40 Compact

By Steve Remy

The H&K USP .40 Compact is a highly reliable gun that I would have no problem entrusting my protection to.  I fired nearly 2,000 rounds down the barrel of this pistol with zero malfunctions of any sort.  The ammo ranged from brass to steel case, and ball to hollow point.  This particular model being reviewed is considered to be a “variant 1” meaning it has a de-cocking lever that doubles as a safety. This H&K can be carried in double action (DA) with the safety on/off, or be carried in single action (SA, cocked and locked) with the safety on/off.  The pistol is fired in either DA/SA mode or SA only.  These features alone allow a multitude of user carry configurations that will meet most people’s personal carry preference.

The HK grips well and feels extremely comfortable when firing.  For added comfort and as a personal preference, I chose to add a slip-on finger groove grip.  The ambidextrous magazine release is a bar across the front strap where the trigger guard and the front strap meet.  It is easy to access without rotating your hand to a mag release button as many left handed shooters must do with non-ambidextrous mag releases.

The gun is easy to disassemble by pushing out the slide release lever and moving the slide forward off of the frame.  The recoil spring is self contained meaning the spring is held in place on the spring guide by a small c-clip.  This only becomes a problem when the c-clip mysteriously disappears during a trip to the range and the spring flies off the guide rod when you begin your cleaning process.  As you can tell, this happened to me about 1,500 rounds through the gun.  Here is where it gets somewhat grim.  HK’s customer service was pretty dismal when I called them about the problem and asked for a replacement c-clip.  My first call was to HK’s main customer service line where I was connected with someone who determined this particular part was out of stock and was unsure of when it would be available.  Being out of stock is understandable in some situations, so I called my area HK law enforcement rep to see if he had any available for purchase.  I spoke with him and he indicated he had a few and could spare a couple to send me free of charge.  After taking my name and shipping address, I didn’t receive anything or hear from him for a couple of weeks.  All subsequent phone calls and messages went unreturned.  In my book this was unacceptable.  Luckily the gun still functions flawlessly without the c-clip, but reassembly after cleaning is now a frustrating and somewhat comical experience.  It takes three hands but unfortunately I only have two, so I am constantly annoyed by their lack of responsiveness.

The HK shoots as accurate as any other well-made compact pistol on the market, especially in the sub 10 yard fighting range where must gun fights happen.  The controls are smooth and easily activated but the trigger could use some work considering this gun will cost most people nearly $900-$1,000 after taxes and FFL fees.  The trigger was jumpy out of the box and never seemed to smooth out during the 2,000 rounds fired.  For the price of the gun I would expect the trigger to be butter smooth, especially knowing the quality engineering that went into producing this gun.

Overall the USP compact is very reliable and backed by a company known for producing high quality firearms.  However, with the price point being nearly $1,000, one must consider the ability to purchase at least two other handguns with similar reliability and functionality for the same amount of money.  There is somewhat of a novelty in owning an HK and many people have purchased one for themselves as a commemorative-type gift.  Being somewhat of a pragmatist if I had $1,000 devoted to purchase another handgun, I might opt in the future to purchase multiple handguns instead of one HK; afterall, isn’t two always better than one?

Streamlight Nano Light

Streamlight Nano By Devin Blystone

This is one of the most compact flashlights I’ve ever seen or used. It’s not the brightest flashlight but for its size, it’s more than adequate. I’ve used this flashlight for lighting up a lock, finding lost items, and to light my path in the dark. I can also attest to its claim to be weatherproof since I lost mine during the winter and found it after the snow melted, half buried in mud. A quick trip to the sink cleaned it up and showed that it was still working great.

Unfortunately this is a discontinued knife so there’s not a lot of availability. On the other hand, it’s a nice enough knife that I still carry it every day. With a quick application of a red and green sharpie to the safety so that its easy to tell if it’s engaged and it makes the knife and easy 8 or 9. Glock 20 Gen 4 10mm Auto

Glock 20 Gen 4 10mm

By Reed Snyder

I have always been a Sig Sauer enthusiast. When my sights strayed from the line of pistols that were my first love, they never fell on polymer pistols. I have however always been curious about the 10mm cartridge. Along my travels, I then developed an appreciation for the .357 Sig cartridge, a distant cousin to the 10mm. When Glock began phasing in the 4th generation of pistols, I found myself drawn to the G20. My desire to acquire a polymer pistol I once scoffed at was again strengthened as I discovered the range of aftermarket barrels that could be installed in the G20. The available barrels allow for the chambering of the .40 S&W as well as the venerable .357 Sig. I was sold, I had to own one. I began my search and failed to find an internet source that priced the pistols anywhere near retail. I was shocked to not only find one in stock at my Local Gun Store, but I found one that was priced to sell at the MSRP. I took my pistol to the range and I was very impressed with how the G20 tamed the 10mm cartridge. Glock and its products have earned a reputation for reliability and simplicity, and justifiably so. The G20 Gen 4 does not disappoint in this regard. The G20 is only slightly larger than the G17 in most of its dimensions and is not all that different in its handling. I am growing fonder of the polymer pistols as I spend more time with the G20 and make no mistake about it, I love my G20. However, I am reminded that the money I saved by buying a polymer pistol may have been in part due to the simplistic standard sights and the rather rough factory trigger. The aftermarket parts arena makes provision for a number of upgrades that can easily take the edge off my dissatisfaction with those two items. After spending time on the pistol, I would heartily recommend the G20 to anyone interested in the 10mm cartridge or a Glock enthusiast looking to complete their collection.

Beretta PX4 Storm Compact

Beretta-PX4.jpg

Beretta is one of the oldest gun makers in the world and I think the experience shows in this pistol. I’ve never had a FTF, FTE, or any kind of complications. Other than the things I don’t like listed below, I can’t complain. The stipling issue was easily overcome by using automotive grip tape, similar to that on skateboards. It can be found at Walmart and many hardware stores, and tutorials on how to apply it can be found on youtube. The take down and cleaning of it are easy as well. Beretta says they’ve used their experience with the M9 in sandy environments to produce a better functioning firearm. Unlike other manufacturers who crank out a new model every year they took their time to produce this masterpiece. Although it has some shortcomings, no product is perfect. It is a very reliable and accurate firearm that is great for conceal or open carry. I think this is one quality gun that I won’t be switching away from for a long time.

Fobus Paddle Magazine Pouch

Fobus Paddle Mag Pouch

By Steve Remy

At first sight, it looks like a convenient mag pouch with a slip on/off paddle design.  Over the past two years, I have worn this mag holder for at least 5 days per week upwards of 10 hours per day; I can honestly say I don’t like it at all.  Considering most of my work involves wearing plain clothes, the paddle design is ideal because it slips on and off when needed.  The rubberized backing on the paddle also helps keep the pouch in place even during rigorous running, jumping, and fighting.  With that being said, the built-in passive retention the pouch provides to the magazines themselves is severely lacking.  At first everything felt great, but after a few months of usage, all retention went out the window and I was forced to modify the pouch with additional soft velcro to hug my magazines.  This only bought me a few more months of retention though, which was frustrating.

At that point, I called Fobus customer service who was happy to fulfill their lifetime no questions asked warranty.  They requested I send them my old pouch and promptly sent me a brand new replacement.  Problem solved, right?  Unfortunately, the same retention issue developed and I am in the “add more velcro” stage of ownership right now with my replacement.  Even with light physical activity I’ve lost one or both magazines on the pavement (luckily to be found quickly).  At least Fobus’ customer service was helpful and willing to replace their product; unfortunately I think the design in flawed in a few places.

Fobus Mag Pouch sideThe other rub (literally) I have with the pouch is two tabs that are molded into the top of the pouch where the paddle is riveted to the pouch itself.  If I am wearing an undershirt, these sharp tabs don’t typically bother me unless I am in the car for an extended period of time.  However, living in a climate that regularly reaches 100+ degree temperatures during the summer months, I don’t always wear an undershirt, which is where this pouch severely pains me.  It feels like I have two thumb tacks driven into waist at times, which works well for late nights on surveillance when I don’t want to fall asleep, at least.

Overall, this pouch is not designed for extended use or comfort.  With a retail price of $29.99, there are better paddle options out there.  I originally purchased this pouch because it was readily available at my local police supply store and inexpensive.  This one falls into the “should have spent more money on a better product” category.  I’ll soon be replacing this pouch as my primary plain-clothes mag pouch, hopefully with something that provides more retention and comfort, with a convenient paddle design as well.

Firearms Insider Reviews – 8 Key Points

Claim to Fame The World’s Only Complete ‘Green’ Weapons Care System. USDA Certified Bio-Based Product. Eliminates Residue. Non-Flammable. Non-Toxic. Improves Accuracy. Developed by former and active duty U.S. Navy SEALs.

Target Market All Gun Owners High round-count shooters

FNBs (Features & Benefits) Froglube CLP is available in liquid, paste or cloth wipes in multiple volume quantities.

From product website: “FrogLube is a heavy specific gravity “food grade” mixture that seeps deep into the micro spaces of the metal and acts as if to ‘season’  the surface of the bore, any friction points and all areas treated with the lube. Once treated, fouling particles resist bonding to metal surfaces;  instead, they easily wipe away or brush off the surface. This also applies to other loose fouling particles such as dirt, dust and sand.  FrogLube does not film, nor is it a coating. Instead it is a treatment that is absorbed throughout the firearm.  It is water insoluble and will repel water and resist corrosion.”

Solvent variety in spray bottle is also available, but CLP works pretty well in breaking up carbon if applied, left to set for approximately 15mins, and then wiped off.

Key Benefits Makes firearms more accurate (through decrease friction and mechanical wear). Cleans, Lubricates and Prevents Rust (CLP) by embedding deep into the metal’s pores.FrogLube Wipes Repels water, dirt, and other particulates. Does not require baking or special preparation of surface, but heated metal will accept      the ‘Frog Love’ better. Harmless to plastic and rubber. Wipes can be cut into smaller squares and used as bore patches.

Our Rating – I really enjoy Froglube as an addition to my cleaning kit. The liquid is great for internals and moving parts: just a few drops on the bolt and work the action a few times, and it’s covered. It is only a little more expensive per ounce than other products, but then again you only need to use small amounts so it will last you longer and it's also not a great substitute for toothpaste, trust me.

+ Liquid form doesn’t evaporate like other lubes + Viscosity of liquid form is just right, not too thick to gum up moving parts and not too thin to run all over the place + A little bit goes along way, it won’t evaporate like other lubes + Wipes are great for treating barrels (especially bead blasted stainless steel or other finishes that need rust protection) or cut into smaller square patches, making bore cleaning a snap. + Smells and tastes like wintergreen flavored gum, it’s quite pleasant actually.

This is a great .22LR rifle that fulfills its intended purpose.  It’s a great way to learn or practice on the AR platform without the expense of .223/5.56 ammo.  My only problem with the rifle is that it is all polymer and the feel of it just doesn’t sit right with me compared to an actual AR.  I realize it is a .22LR variation intended for a much different purpose than a non-polymer AR, but having become accustomed to actual ARs over the last 15 or so years, the feel and weight distribution will take me a little time to get used to.  I feel almost as if I am going to break the rifle if I get too rough with it…I won’t be hammering any nails, digging out stuck vehicles, or dragging this down any hallways during training because I just don’t know what I’ll end up doing to it.  I even feel as if I have to go easy on the charging handle because that too is polymer.  Oh well though, if anything breaks I’ll just send it back to S&W and hope their customer service takes care of the rest.

With all that being said, this will stay in the safe with the rest of my firearms for many, many years.  Its fun and inexpensive to shoot, nearly anyone from children to experts can shoot it accurately, and it has worked flawlessly so far for me.  Rest assured when they are old enough, this will be the first AR platform rifle my kiddos get to shoot with.  I’ve shot it with CCI mini-mags and other assorted .22LR ammo I could scrounge up and the rifle never had a single hiccup.  There is something very positive to be said about a .22LR rifle that can eat almost anything since most .22LRs are very picky about what they will and won’t shoot.

Overall I would buy this rifle again, which I may have to do once the kiddos start arguing over who gets to use what at the range.  I would also recommend it to any friends that were in the market for one.

This holster holds your handgun so close to you that it takes a little getting used to.  With that being said, trying anything else after this makes you feel like your gun is overexposed and riding out about 3 feet away from your hip.  Having it rest so close to you starts to give you that warm and fuzzy reminder that you are one with your handgun and together you can defeat anything that threatens you or your loved ones.

On top of all of this, Raven Concealment has an unconditional lifetime warranty which literally says no matter how you break it, they’ll repair it or replace it for free.  Folks, guarantees don’t get any better than that.  The same officer that introduced me to Raven had an issue with his holster last year.  He was in an extended training environment for 3 weeks straight in which he was required to carry a red gun at all times while in training.  The dimensions of the red gun slightly exceeded that of his actual firearm, resulting in less than ideal retention for his duty weapon once training was over.  He simply called Raven, told them the problem, shipped them the holster and they repaired it no questions asked.  It was a simple and quick process.

Pricing and order lead time are the only slight bit of heartburn I have with this holster.  At $84.99, it ranks in the top percentage of pricing for holsters of similar design.  In addition to that, no one wants to wait to enjoy their new purchase.  When I first purchased mine, I waited nearly 6 months to receive it.  I believe the company has had significant growth since 2010 so at this point I hope their lead time has been reduced to something more reasonable.  I do like the fact that they now have “quick ship” items available for purchase, which are likely their top requested models, so the wait doesn’t affect all customers.  Moving back to price, once you consider this may be the very last holster you buy for your favorite gun, it really isn’t that bad.  I’ll never buy another concealment holster for my duty gun which means I’ll likely save money in the long run.

Overall, kydex concealment holsters don’t get any better than this, period.  If my department chooses to change duty guns, Raven Concealment will be my first stop to order a new holster.

I have used and owned one or another variation of Sig Sauer’s pistols for almost 25 years.  During that time, I have never been disappointed by any of the pistols that I have had the pleasure to use.  I purchased my Sig P220 in 2010.  I’ve fired my pistol at local ranges, on my deer lease, and in local “bragging rights” competitions with my friends.  The P220 has never failed me and I have come to appreciate the pistol to such a degree that I would stake the lives of my family and myself upon the knowledge that this pistol will work every time I pick it up.  I know that we have all heard others talk about this or that pistol being better than all others.  I’ll not say that here.  I will tell you that my P220 stands shoulder to shoulder with the best pistols out there and I’ll defend that statement to the bitter end.

Our Rating +  The revolver is very small, and very concealable. +  It chambers .38 Special +P which is a fairly decent self-defense round. Some models also chamber .357 Magnum. +  It has stainless steel construction which offers some measure of corrosion resistance. +  For a small snub-nose revolver, it has surprising accuracy.

-  The gun recoils quite heavily when loaded with .357 Magnum rounds. -  The sights, while satisfactory for close up work, are lacking. They tend to wash out in bright sunlight, being made out of stainless steel. -  The gun only holds five shots, so you have to be comfortable with reloading and with the guns limitations.

Our Rating +  The Trigger pull is AMAZING! I was very impressed with the smoothness of the action and the pull weight was not very heavy at all, but not too light. +  The gun balances well in the hand. +  The heavy weight of the pistol (54 oz.) helps soak up some of that .44 Magnum recoil. +  The built in provisions for scope mounting on the Hunter model are a real plus.

-  The heavy weight is both a plus and a minus.  You would want a good holster to carry this in the field all day. -  The rubber grips that came on it did not allow me to hold the gun well. The factory wood grips helped me maintain control of the revolver much better.  Others may have a different experience.

What you you think?

I was in need of a low-profile red dot sight to mount to a .22lr pistol.  I did not want to enter the price points of Trijicon, RMR, Burris FastFire, etc.  It comes with a small screwdriver for adjusting, and a wheel that shows direction or rotation for adjustment of windage and elevation.  It appeared to be designed to slip over the screwdriver tool as a rotation guide, but did not fit well.  This sight did get sent back to manufacturer after it failed during initial sight-in.  Under warranty, it was replaced within 1.5 months.  The replacement has faired much better and has held zero after 200+ rounds of 22lr.  I've seen others mount onto 12 gauge shotguns, but I do not yet have the confidence it will withstand the recoil forces beyond the .22 family.

Our Rating I think Thompson Center did well in designing the Hot Shot to look identical to their Pro Hunter model.  It is a perfect size for a small youth to learn on but would be too small for even a young teenage male.  This model offers simple, and easy operation making for a fun and educational learning experience. + Single Shot. + Acquire target easily with peep sight. + Break action is very smooth + “Safety always on” feature is very nice. - Availability (Discontinued) - Too small for a young teenager to use practically but could still be a fun option to plink with.

Score 8 Great!80 Would be higher if it weren’t discontinued.

Mike Emert Firearms Radio Network This Week In Guns

I really wish this model was still available! It’s an excellent learning tool. The Crickett would be the Hot Shots biggest competition but for being geared towards first time, youth shooters, the break action of this rifle via the trigger guard and the difference in how the safety works makes this rifle a better option.  This obviously is subjective to what the child prefers, however.

The TLR-1s is a great light for those looking to forgo pressure switches and specifically mount to a handgun platform, although it works on shotguns and rifles decently as well.  The strobe's activation is a bit challenging to use in stressful scenarios, as it requires a rapid "double tap" of the paddle switch (easier to do with supporting hand's thumb as opposed to trigger finger on a handgun). The light does protrude over half an inch from the muzzle of my Glock 19, however it isn't too intrusive and the controls are exactly where they need to be.  I've used the beam as a spotlight numerous times, its deceptively bright for its size. Great addition to the 'truck gun.'

What do you think? If there is someone who doesn’t like the G17 Gen4 for some other reason than personal preference then I sure would like to know why.  I understand some people may not shoot Glock as well as they shoot another gun due to their body type or their personal mechanics.  The G17 Gen4 has really set the bar high as far as reliability goes, and you can’t get any more simple in the operation of the gun.  It’s rugged and trusted by law enforcement agents worldwide.  Popularity is not always the best way to determine a product’s quality but when lives are at stake, popularity is probably the biggest factor to consider.
