Ruger SR-22 Purple Frame

SR221.jpg

SR22

Every new shooter needs to experience the joy of a 22LR pistol.  The 22LR's reputation for lightest recoil and lightest pricetag (when available) offers hours of enjoyment and valuable understanding on how firearms function and proper handling.  For the significant loved one in your life - husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, nephew/niece, child, grandchild - a 22LR is a fantastic tool to let them use at the range.

I stumbled across this "purple pea shooter" at a local gunshop and new it was only a matter of time before I picked it up for my significant other.  Her favorite color is purple, and I had already gotten her a Ruger 10/22 rifle with a purple painted stock.  This little Ruger seemed a perfect addition to her collection.  The timing of it being just before Valentine's Day made this gift even better.

She was of course was furious at seeing yet another white cardboard box with Ruger's emblem on the top, but was quickly overjoyed at learning it was her's. Our first range trip with the SR22 was very successful, it fed Remington Thunderbolt 22LR flawlessly and the groups were adequate with plenty of room for improvement.  I did experience some double feeding on the next trip to the firing line using Federal Match ammo, I assume the feed ramp prefers round tip bullets over certain hollowpoint bullets, I will be sure to experiment with more as they show up on the shelves.

sr22-02

This 22LR has followed us to the range every time since purchasing it as its always enjoyable to shoot. Her comments are that the grip really felt good in her hand with the palm swell installed, and made the negligible recoil even lighter and follow-up shots easy to do. She was also a big fan of the hammer as it made it easy to know when it was ready to fire, and the safety disabling the hammer was very useful for when stopping between shots.

While it's not the best in any category, it is a solid and well constructed pistol that is certainly worth the mid-range pricetag of $320 that I got it for.  With is safety features that are easy to manipulate but also help ensure correct handling is used, this pistol is ideal for new shooters.

What others are saying?: "Like many people, I recently started looking for something fun and less expensive to shoot than my higher caliber handguns, and a couple of months ago I bought my SR22 for that purpose. I love being able now to go to the range a time or two each week and not spend a fortune in the process, while having a blast each time. Along those lines, one of the SR22's particularly great features, as many reviewers have stated before me, is that this gun doesn't care much what you feed it, and that's a great trait when ammo is still so hard to find. But in truth, all of its features are great: incredible accuracy, superb ergonomics, light-weight construction but extremely sold feel, hassle-free takedown and cleaning! .... The three-dot sight system is hard to beat. Even in poor light, without any of the enhancements of fiber optics or other techier add-ons, this little gun provides a clear and fast sight picture that lets you hit and stay on target round after round. Maybe this isn't literally the perfect fun gun, but if it isn't, I don't know what is!"  -DaveG49 Cabelas Review

Our Rating:

+ External safety functions as decocker, making this pistol a great learning platform for a new shooter. + Simple to disassemble and clean. + Includes soft zippered pouch, two magazines and two pinky extensions. + Magazines have plastic thumb assist for compressing spring that doesn't hurt after multiple reloads. + Price is very decent compared to other .22lr pistols.

- Seems picky with ammo, ate up Remington Lightning but choked on Federal Match. - Magazine release is mushy to me, could be easier to actuate. - Picatinny rail has smaller slots and shallower than most polymer frames in my safe.  Certain accessories may not mount. -Trigger reset length is terrible, not a good tool for teaching accurate handgun shooting.

Griffin Armament M4SDII Tactical Compensator

griffin

When investing in upgrades for your rifle, 90% of the time the highest priced option is the most effective.  Any research into muzzle brakes will support that claim.  The highest price points carry the research and quality of materials to back up the value. The highest user reviews and praise will naturally go to the most effective component, whether or not we can all afford that specific example is a whole other matter.

In looking for an upgrade to the A2 "birdcage" flash hider on my AR-15 rifle, I looked at all the different brakes and comps on the marketplace.  There are ALOT to choose from.  First of all you need to determine whether you want Flash Suppression (reduced fireball at muzzle) or Recoil Compensation through either a compensator or whats more commonly called a muzzle brake.  I wanted reduced recoil impulses for faster shooting. The top contender I found was the BattleComp, which goes between $150-$200 depending on caliber desired.  I for one wasn't planning on investing that much into a 5.56mm rifle as the recoil is negligible to begin with when firing from a rested position.  The particular build I was working on was for competitive shooting, thus moving and maneuvering.  I wanted a muzzle device that wouldn't add too much bulk or length to the rifle.  So I found the nearest alternative to the BattleComp in form and in function, at nearly half the price.

Enter the Griffin Armament M4SDII Tactical Compensator.  It's a pretty simple brake, with small circular ports that encircle nearly the entire circumference except for the 6'oclock position, which prevents gases from kicking up dirt, dust, or blowing whatever you had laying on the bench.  The ports divert gasses upward and outward and that translates to a reduction in shift for your point of aim.  Sounds pretty minor, but when trying to put 2-3 rounds in a tight pattern while you are moving with your rifle, it becomes pretty important. Griffin has a couple videos showing different brakes being used in single, burst, and full auto fire as well as night time flash signature tests.  If you check other reviews, you'll find most users found that for under $100 the M4SDII is hard to beat, keeping pace with its higher priced competitors.

The M4SDII is also compatible with several suppressor models that will attach right over the top of it.  This is great for those who want to swap between unsuppressed and suppressed quicker, and the device will also serve as a blast baffle and increase the service life of your "can." I probably won't get to appreciate this feature but it may benefit others reading this review.  If you are still running an A2 flash hider or similar device and are interested in a better performing part, I challenge you to try this or one of Griffin's other models and see the difference.

Smith & Wesson M&P P357c

M&P357c

My first new addition of 2014 is an Smith & Wesson M&P 357c.   It's an interesting little powerhouse, and had I not already had 357 sig reloading components I probably would have passed this compact pistol up.  However after taking it out on our first date and getting a feel for its frame, I think I've grown a fondness for her.  The price of the meal was unbelievable, as .357 Sig ammo prices have only skyrocketed up - on top of the prepanic pricetag that was in the $30 per 50 range.  The only boxes I found locally were $33 for Winchester whitebox 125gr FMJ 50 rounds or $42 for the same offering from American Eagle.  The trade off for the lighter wallet was heavy firepower, the sig round is definitely a snappy performer with a wallop.

Short history of the .357 Sig round: Developed in 1994 by Sig Sauer, the round 9mm bullet in a necked down (but slightly longer) 40s&w case. It's one of the first commercial members of the bottle-neck pistol cartridge family.  The reason behind the design was to match the performance of a .357 Magnum 125gr round fired from a 4 inch revolver, but with a higher capacity semi auto pistol with magazines. Law Enforcement was all over the .357 Sig in the mid-late 90's and early 2000's until the economy tanked and it became much more fiscal to switch back to 40sw or 9mm.

The 357c and its other M&P bretheren have earned a high reputation for concealability, firepower, and overall suitability. As a defensive caliber, its hard to disagree that the .357 sig has an edge.  With an average velocity of 1,385 ft/s and muzzle energy of 532 ft·lb, the projectile has more gas than both its 9mm and 40sw competition.  Penetration averages 12-16 inches depending on bullet type.  This equates to more energy delivered to tissue, and less resistance from barriers and heavy clothing.  In a compact like this M&P, its a great carry platform.  Having 10+1 rounds may seem disadvantageous to some who are legally allowed to carry more, or have the body frame that allows for a full size grip.  But for those who want something smaller and easier to carry, and still have confidence in what the caliber is capable of, the .357c seems like the ticket.  Those with sausage fingers may find three or two digits on the frame is pretty skimpy, and those mag extenders with the pinky ledge maybe something worth getting.  Just be sure to pick up that brass, because its not something you come across at the range often and even if you do not reload, someone out there does and will be grateful to do business with you.

To address the affordability of future dates with this dame, I picked up a conversion barrel from Storm Lake in 9mm.  The barrel was about $150 after tax and shipping, and will surely pay for itself after a few range sessions.  I picked up a couple 17rd full size 9mm magazine (thank you Washington State for not trying to limit that freedom, I'm keeping my eye on you though!) and some X-grip adapters that make those mags flush with the compact frame.  The result is a very comfortable range shooter, the magazine combination does not detract from the ergonomics but adds to them, giving the grip a Walther-esque curve that just FITS my hands much to my surprise.  The Storm Lake barrel is supposedly "Match" grade, and with my shooting I can only determine that it hits where I point it.

photo 5

What I don't like about the M&P357c is its "ninja" trigger reset, which is barely noticeable at all. Someone who has never had the blessing/curse of developing muscle memory and shooting habits with a Glock or other polymer strikerfire pistol may not care about it, but it drives me nuts. I'm used to that audible and tangible reset, and if it doesn't go off I'm used to treating it as a malfunction.  It is there just ever so slightly, so I will have to adjust sensitivity.  Also, I despise the safety systems.  M&P's seem to come in different safety varieties, the least of which I hate is the thumb safety surprisingly, and I've only seen it on a 9mm compact model once (Most including mine do not have this).  All factory models sport a hinged trigger safety, which is disruptive to good trigger pulls IMHO, and can easily be defeated by a stick of lip balm, jacket drawstring, a pen, basically anything thats rigid enough and the right motion and the trigger will depress fully, which probably explains the 6.5 lb trigger weight.  There are modifications for both of those issues out there with basic disassembly abilities and access to youtube.  The other safety I really don't care for is the magazine safety, which deploys when a magazine is released from the gun.  Sure it can prevent ND's from that infamous "last round in the chamber" from occurring when you pull the mag out, but there's really no substitute for competence of the firearm operator. If for whatever reason you are in a struggle and the magazine is ejected from your M&P you had better switch to melee mode, because you are now holding an expensive bludgeoning device. Of course not many crooks will know about that achilles heel of safeties, so practice that poker face!

Our Rating:

+ Better ergonomics than Glock (Gen 3) in my collection - easy to customize to personal hand size - grip has good beavertail/concave area for web of hand + Trigger is relatively smooth (mine was  used/broken in) and doesn't feel heavy as 6.5 lbs sounds. + Scalloped rear slide serrations work well. + Sights are bright and white, rear is by Novak + Easy to convert to 40sw or 9mm with conversion barrels from S&W or Storm Lake.  Can accept a factory S&W 40c barrel, uses same mags.

- Trigger reset is almost negligible, not audible and barely tangible.  Takes getting used to or modification. - Taking down not as fluid as a glock or XD, requires a tool (integrated in grip) to pry a lever from inside the slide, makes cleaning or caliber swapping a slow process. - I personally think the trigger safeties on M&P's are pointless. A wide margin of objects besides a finger could inside the trigger guard and deactivate safety with the right downward motion and cause accidental discharge. - Not a big fan of the magazine safety either (will not fire when mag is ejected)

Redfield Rampage Spotting Scope

rampage

For shooting past 100 yards, these eyes can use all the help they can get. A spotting scope is a good addition to the range gear so that you or a partner can see your groups/impacts at extended ranges. On the first outing with this optic my shooting guest was able to see the exact point of impact of a .308 bullet on a steel plate at 450 yards, to the inch.  Having a good spotting scope is also crucial for glassing the hills during a hunt or scouting session, which will definitely be the case this next fall for my Rampage.  When it comes to spotting scopes (or any optics in general) you really get what you pay for.  However with the Redfield Rampage kit, it seems you get just a little bit more bang for your buck.

The Rampage Kit comes with a soft carrying case, a small tripod, a soft scope cover, and covers for both the eyepiece and objective lenses.  Powered at 20-60 with a 60mm bell, it has enough power to see bullet holes at extended ranges.  It's just enough for me to clearly read street signs at 1,000 yards away, but edges are soft to be honest. I've used -$100 dollar spotting scopes from Simmons and Bushnell in the past, and this Redfield edges them out in glass clarity, but only just a bit.

You can certainly drop $300-500+ on a spotting scope and get something thats higher quality in alot of areas, but with a budget of $200 this is definitely a contender.

What others are saying?: "Love having the ability to quickly acquire my target shots from 100+ yards without having to strain my eyes with the rifle's scope or having to trek my way to the target for closer inspection. I chose Redfield because of their lower price point and the decent reviews I was reading. The tripod is on the light weight cheaper end but that seamed fairly typical for most spotting scopes which included one. The Velcro covering is nice but it takes awhile to get it all unzipped, flaps open and everything setup. The view was pretty clear up to the highest power then things start to get a little soft. Overall the scope does what I expected and I am very happy with my purchase." Optics Planet Review

Remington 700 AAC-SD + Bell & Carlson Medalist M40 Stock

m401.jpg

When it comes to bolt action rifles, the Remington 700 platform is almost ubiquitous.  Big Green has created over a dozen varieties and flavors of bolt guns based off the platform because of its success and time-tested reliability.  Police and Military have used the 700 for quite some time, and it's no stranger in the field for both big and small game.  Variety is the spice of life, and Remington has something to offer most consumers no matter the niche they are after.

The 700 SPS Tactical is designed as a compact tactical rifle with a shortened 20 inch varmint (heavy profile) barrel, BDL floorplate, and a Hogue overmolded stock that's usable in any weather condition and makes grip & recoil both manageable.  It is chambered in both .308 Win and .223 Rem. The Hogue stock has a flatter type forend and a low, straight comb. It's really more of an entry-level tactical bolt action rifle meant to be accessible to a greater range of the market.  The AAC-SD variant is the same rifle, but with a "ghillie" Hogue stock that's green with flecks of color and swirls.  It has the letters AAC stamped on the receiver, and is only available in .308 Win although I've seen some in 300 Blackout floating around.

I snatched up the rifle because of the hype and it already having a threaded barrel.  On the shelf, initial impressions are pretty high.  It shoots fairly well, many owners have claimed MOA or sub-MOA out of the box.  Mine wasn't exactly as consistent, and has lead me down the path of reading, learning, and smacking myself in the forehead a couple times.  The first thing that needs replacing is the stock.  I would have paid an extra $200-250 if it had come with an HS precision or B&C stock, but perhaps it was thought that shooters who want to invest in greater accuracy would take the trouble to do so already, and so they slapped on the Hogue stock as a lowest price point option.  The hogue stock has flex to it, sure it has aluminum pillars but the forend WILL touch the barrel when using a bipod or any support.  That's a bad thing if you want your bullet holes anywhere close to each other.  I opened up the last 2 inches of the stock with a dremel to compensate for this which had to help some, but ultimately if you are after a rigid stock with solid contact with your rifle and a free floated barrel, you have to ante up and upgrade.  The difference could be 0.5"-1" tighter groups at 100 yards, which may or may not be a concern for your own level of confidence and satisfaction.

m40-picks

I decided to pick up a Bell & Carlson Medalist/Tactical "M40" type stock.  There's alot of options out there, and how I decided really was price, and how good did this same rifle look in each stock during a google images surf session.  The time tested military style M40 riflestock was introduced in the 1970’s, replacing the wood stocks on standard issue U.S. Military sniper rifles. Even though the U.S. military has moved into other configurations, this M40 silhouette's popularity continues to increase to this day as the chassis is hard to improve upon.  B&C's M40 was found at just under $250 through Redhawk Rifles, and it was only 2.5lbs which addressed my total weight concern.  I plan on using this as a hunting rifle as well as shooting from the bench so a compromise in weight was needed.

bedding

Now if I was a really thorough reviewer, I would have photographed groups with the factory stock, groups before bedding, and groups after bedding.  But I didn't get around to it, so you'll have to take my word that the above photo with a 3 shot group under 1 inch at 100 yards is the best I've shot with this gun, and that was with cheap 150gr factory ammo.  I'm confident now that working up some reloads in the 168-175 pill range will produce some very good results.

The Truth About Guns Review

"Great rifle for what I paid, makes an excellent budget precision starter kit. I did change out the stock, because the Hogue overmold stock, although attractive, was way too flexible. On a bipod I can actually watch the stock contact the barrel, negating the free float. It would be 5 stars if not for the stock, which I consider to be a conceptual flaw. This is meant to be a tactical rifle, with the ability to make multiple accurate shots. This is not possible form a bipod with the included stock. " Buds Guns Review

B&C M40 Stock: "The B&C Medalist stocks (of which we are discussing) are a hand laid Kevlar and composite shell with fiber reinforced foam over an aluminum inner chassis. Our Rating:

R700 AAC-SD: + Short bull barrel achieves accuracy through rigidity, easy to transport with shorter OAL. + Will make a great suppressor host. + Trigger is satisfactory IMHO, 3.5lbs is light enough for me. + Its a Remington 700, one of the most customizable, blueprinted actions out there.  Aftermarket options are very good.

- Factory Hogue stock is the weakest link, a must-replace for any serious shooter. - Remington's 700 bolt handles aren't as robust as they were in the past, can be broken if dropped or prying bolt open on stuck casing. (Had mine tapped and secured with a screw for extra support)

B&C M40 Stock: + Absolute drop-in fit with no modifications needed (on this particular rifle, your results may vary) hinged floorplate operates correctly. + Improves groups greatly from factory Hogue stock + Precise CNC-machined aluminum bedding block ensures a perfect metal-to-metal fit along receiver, aligns the barreled action, stiffen the forend, and eliminate the need for conventional bedding methods (Although glass bedding will still help create a perfect, gapless bed.) + Freefloats the barrel + Weight kept down compared to other model stocks 3lbs + over +  Stock comes with a lifetime factory warranty on materials and workmanship.

- Inside factory inletting was a little rough on this particular stock, but got filled in during glass bedding process anyway. - Outdated company website (call me, B&C!)

Score: 6.5 OK65

R700 AAC-SD:  Reasoning - for the MSRP amount and AAC's name attached I expected more innovation or at least a better all around rifle instead of an SPS w/ threaded barrel and different color stock. It's still a good rifle, but a tackdriver or tactical rifle out of the box it is not. Cost saving corners for Remington are pretty obvious. For $600-$800, better performers are available.

CC3 Recover Tactical 1911 Grips

recovertac1.jpg

recovertac

After featuring the CC3 1911 Grips back in December '13 in a product spotlight on the podcast, I preordered a pair of grips to try for myself.  They arrived this week (late February) and I installed the black set on my Ruger SR1911c.  The grips only come with screws/nuts for tightening the two halves together at the rail under the dust cover, by the trigger guard. Its a solid mount, no wobble and the gap between the two halves becomes virtually non-existent. As far as looks go, it definitely adds something to the 1911.  Whether that something is good or bad is really personal preference. Prepare for questions and admiration from newer shooters, and scoffs/hisses from veteran 1911 owners. I've heard the word 'Heresy' at least once so far in passing. If you want your 1911 to look and feel more like a XD-M or similar polymer pistol, this is right up your alley.

The main purpose of the CC3 grips is adding the benefit of a rail to affix lights or lasers to a 1911 pistol that is railless, some may say as God or JMB intended.  The designer, Tamir Porat (creator of the Tavor and other Israeli defense products) clearly wanted to add a futuristic look to the timeless war horse. There are reliefs for thumbs on both sides that have very contemporary angles that continue throughout the panels.  This could very well find itself in the next futuristic shooter flick.  With three colors in black, green, and tan, there's a color that will match your pistola's frame and slide.

I'm not a huge fan of how it looks on my commander-sized pistol at the reduced length of barrel, slide, and dust cover make it so the CC3 rail protrudes about 3/8 of an inch further than desired, for the lines in the frame to really line up with the rail.  Of course its still a flush fit inside the channel of the grip.

As for the 'grippiness'of the grip itself, I'm not a huge fan of the texture. It's just raised curved lines that are quite pronouced. Easy for the ejection molding process but cutting edge and comfortable they are not. I foresee a dremel and a woodburning pen in this grip's future.

For the price point, you certainly would be in the market at nice G10 grips or even some exotic wood grips.  I really did just fork out $50 a piece for a plastic design concept of a new product.  Would I have still bought them if I weren't hosting the show/reviewing them for you guys? Probably. Will these stay on my 1911 for awhile? Probably not, I'm not interested in getting a new 1911 holster as I'm enjoying the ones I already have grown accustomed to. They are working with holster manufacturers to get more options out there available in popular rigs.

One of the grip panels for the Dark Earth set was a factory second / had defects, upon emailing CC3 Tactical with a photo they promptly sent out a brand new set, like within hours.  Needless to say their support is very dedicated to customer satisfaction, gotta love that!

  • Easy 3 minute installation. No gunsmith or permanent modifications required.

  • Total Weight 80 grams
  • Made in Israel

What others are saying? "Both halves of the grips mate perfectly with one another with no visible gaps. Weighing in at a 80 grams, about the weight of the current generation iPod touch, it looks and feels very well made. The grip itself adds a quarter inch thickness on each side and less than a quarter inch to the front strap. The grooves on the grip are mostly smooth. You can run your entire hand and grip it quickly without scraping your hand. It is very "un-aggressive" unlike the VZ Recon's that would grate cheese. What surprised me the most about the CC3 is how my Surefire X300 fit on the picatinny rail. The light slide on just snug and flush with the front of the "new" trigger guard with no play or wiggle to it."

The dedicated shooting jacket.  Some people have their favorite +$200 tactical, bells & whistles and all.  I chose to go the cheaper route and picked up a Condor Phantom.  It's no 5.11 tactical, but it has features that make it useful at the range and makes me look a bit cleaner and more professional at the bench.

What others are saying? "The quality of the jacket was far better than most of the bad reviews have you believe. For the price you can't go wrong. I have used it extensively in the Pacific North West and it has stood up to some of the worst conditions it has to show here. The only downfalls are like previously noted; - The zipper could be re-designed alot better, it is hard to zip sometimes, and impossible with gloves. - The waist area should have a draw string, because wearing this jacket makes it seem like I am pregnant. Horton Pro 175 Crossbow

horton

By Kimberly Cross

My father purchased me the Horton in 2009 for hunting.  I used it to hunt Elk in WA state and White tale in Central Missouri, Turkeys in Western MO. Signted in at 80 yrds, it’s a great hunting tool.

First hunt: loaded on the hike in, left wing began to fray (made of fiber glass). Manufacturer quickly replaced, haven’t had issues since.

Remington 1100 20ga. Shotgun

remington1100

Every hunter has one firearm with the most sentimental value. It's probably one of the first they've ever had, and is reliable without question.  For me, this would be my Remington Model 1100 in 20 gauge.  Given to me many years ago by a close family friend and role model in all things outdoorsman, this is the shotgun with which I've learned to hunt upland game birds and shoot skeet.  Over a whole decade later it's still my favorite shotgun for the range or in the field.

I'm not an extraordinary shot or anything, but I can claim with this firearm I can get double and even triple consecutive hits on clay pigeons and quail. The lightweight and soft recoil of 20 gauge plus the gas operated recoil system make this shotgun a dream.

The blued image has held up over the past 10+ years flawlessly, and the engraving on the receiver and bolt add to the classy aesthetic of the shotgun.  This will be one of the finest heirlooms I pass on to my future kin.

What other aesthetic options or finishes are available? Many different models to choose from: synthetic/composite, stainless, blued, camo.

What others are saying? "Another high point of the 1100 gas operation is reduced recoil. This gun will be much more enjoyable to shoot than your mule-kicking Mossberg. Especially since it is a lighter gauge. But, don't let that fool you. The 20 gauge is plenty of gun for anything from geese to doves and deer to pigs. In fact, I like the way it puts the smackdown on a a gobbler with heavier loads or gracefully knocks a quail down with field loads. Great all-round gauge. " - fieldandstream.com review

Parallax Tactical FFSSR Rail

In building a new range/competitive AR15 from extra parts I was ready to upgrade to an extended length forend, to give the 18" platform an SPR type look.  The Parallax Tactical FFSSR rail caught my eye for its slim profile and rails only where they are needed.  I was lucky enough to catch the 15" handguards as soon as they were instock again (they sold out within 48 hrs)  Shipping was quick from Parallax in San Diego and their customer service is pretty decent.

What other aesthetic options or finishes are available?  Anodized black, Cerakoted options available from Parallax when inventory is high enough.

What others are saying? "Unlike many of the slick sided tubular hand guards on the market, the Parallax Tactical Rail is very overbuilt. I have enough confidence in it to leave it on our home defense shotgun.  The 2X doubler didn't impress me much, although I can see it's value for some purchasers. Mossberg 930 SPX

mossberg9301.jpg

mossberg930

930

Tactical Shotguns of yester year.  It's good to see the ol' 12 gauge staying strong, and as the popularity with module, fancy rifles has grown, the shotgun world has been becoming a little... blacker.  Rails, High Capacity clip-o-zines, flesh-eating muzzle devices... no this isn't one of those shotguns.  The Mossberg 930 is pretty conventional by todays high-speed-low-drag, 'gotta have 1913 rail all over the place' standards.  And thank the Lord for that, because this gun is really meant to be put to work.  Law Enforcement, Military, and recreational competition is where the 930 shines due to its durability and reliability.

Jerry-Miculek1It's actually a 3-Gunner fan favorite, with more than a few famous shooters (ahem - Jerry Miculek, Lena Miculek, Ryan Flannigan) having signature models.  Seriously, check out Jerry's 930 with the huge magazine tube and gnarly muzzle compensator, what a beast!  Buying a 3-Gun platform in 930 isn't painless though, as availability is real tough, but for the price it still comes way lower than a Benelli.  Luckily it's Mossberg, and that means aftermarket availability is out there.  Not as much as the 500 but its still out there.  Finding a 22"-24" is the hardest part, since these come with an 18" and everyone's looking for a longer barrel so they can get a longer mag tube as well.  I'm still searching.  But in-between matches, its a great range beast, and will definitely fit a home defense role.

The only real issue that floats around out in the community is the anemic ejection of low-brass and inexpensive shells right out of the box.  Some claim they never had the issue, other's swear by it.  I did have a few shells get caught in the action at first.  But I managed to find some winchester bulk that was a bit bolder at 1200fps, and still mixed in some 3" old game loads for about 2-300 rounds.  It shoots the cheap stuff just fine now.

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mm FFP

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mm I must admit, I'm quickly becoming a "Vortex Fanboy."  It's not difficult, when a company puts something out there that takes the market by storm and genuinely gets the community talking.  I hear the same story whenever I ask the guy behind the counter about them:  "I know quite a few guys who, after looking through a Vortex or trying a buddy's, came in and swapped out their Nightforce glass for one."  Now I'm not much of an optics snob, but my collection of glass has seen some nice upgrades in the last year.  Finding out that as I'm willing to spend more on frivolous bolt-ons that don't really make my groups any tighter, a nicer optic will help in leaps and bounds.

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mm

I had a rifle length AR-15 build that used to host an entry level Leupold VX-1 that was 3-9, but I decided to slap in onto my father's trusty 40 year old winchester deer gun instead.  I had wanted this build to be a range/coyote/3-Gun platform, which is asking alot in the optics department.  I looked at Trijicon ACOGs and the new VCOG, but I felt there wasn't enough versatility with those. There are plenty of 1-4x or 1-6x scopes that could fit that bill, but I like giving my eyes all the help they can get.  Additionally, all those have reticles that are so frackin' tiny, I need a new prescription  just to read the hashmarks.  So one day I popped into a Sportsmans Warehouse and the counter jockey put this vortex in my hands.

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mmFirst Focal Plane (FFP) was the ticket I was looking for.  A scope that dials down to 2.5x for close range cardboard or fur works well, and the 10x power is just enough for 100-300 yard shooting.  Vortex also offers a 2.5-10x44 cheaper flavor, but without a parallax adjustment or illuminated reticle...  all things I felt were standards I needed, as I've grown accustomed to them on another Viper I have on my bolt rifle.   It's also a nice balanced weight at just over 18 oz and the smaller bell gives alittle more flexibilty in the rings department.  I still had a hell of a time finding 30mm rings high enough to make a flattop rail / A2 buttstock work, but I ended up ordering a Burris PEPR and it fit the bill.

Zeroing at the range: Very enjoyable.  Usually zeroing an optic in can be tedious, frustrating, and pricey on the round count. I did a preliminary laser boresighting the night before, but it was just barely on paper at 50 yards.  A couple rounds of adjustment back at the 100 yard bench and it was right where it needed to be.  I shot a few mags at 2.5x at 20 yards, trying to best simulate competition conditions.  Went well, quickly transitioning to 6-10x on the fly is tough because the magnification ring is snug, which isn't a bad thing.  I threw on a quick lever which made it easier (if Vortex included this in the package, I would be extremely pleased as coughing up another $50-60 for a CNC'd two piece ring is tough to swallow.

The scope does comes with an inspection certificate, CR2032 battery, a bikini scope cover, cleaning cloth, CRS zero stop shims, allen wrench, manuals, and a Vortex pin.  The other Viper scope I own with a 50mm objective came with a sun shade.  I really wish this did as well, but no luck! Maybe I'll pick up a killflash scope cap one of these days.

Howard Leight Impact Sport Electronic Earmuffs

impact1.jpg

impact

I first came across these e-muffs when a hunting buddy was raving about his newly acquired superhuman hearing abilities in the field.  At first his claims seems exaggerative (as they usually are) but upon trying them for myself, I find his recommendation was dead on the money (as he usually is).  Referred to as the "game ear" in our small circle, these electronic earmuffs by Howard Leight (Sperian) are perfect for shooters and hunters.  They work as most electronic earmuffs do at the range, when things go BANG they shut off the amplification, while picking up other sounds like conversations, range commands, etc.  Where the unique wow factor comes in, is when you pop these on in the field.  Duck hunters - there's always that sneaky mallard that you only locate by the sound of wings displacing the cold crisp air, followed shortly by a deafening blast from your comrade's 12 gauge.  With these earmuffs, that duck will sounds like California Condor swooping down on your blind from much further away!  And more importantly, your ears won't be ringing the rest of the day after that trigger time.

My old man puts these on when he's trying to ambush a buck.  After 30+ years of heavy equipment operation, a CH47 Chinook helicopter could sneak up and surprise him. But with these muffs on, nature comes alive around him (you have to adjust, a falling maple leaf can sound like a hoof-step if you let your imagination get the better of you).  It's a real ace for the woods.

The Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC is a leather/kydex hybrid inside the waistband (IWB) holster which offers alot to the concealed carry market.  The customization options from Comp-Tac are thorough, and the design of the platform itself allows for swapping out the kydex bodies for other gun models (sold separately) giving the owner the ability to reuse the same leather chassis and carry different firearms.

The holster I received is for the fullsize 1911, and it makes that steel warhorse disappear.  I found that the considerably reduced bulge made rotating and normal movements comfortable, with no pressure reminding me at every turn of the holster.  The only downside I found carrying a 5 inch 1911 inside the waistband is the length running down my leg, which makes riding in a vehicle a hit-or-miss as far as posture and holster position go.  Not bad once you find the sweet spot.

GunGuyRadio_3_October 06, 2013

I also tried carrying a commander sized 1911 (4.25 inch barrel instead of 5 inches) and the retention was equal.  If anything the real difference was a faster draw as the muzzle cleared the holster three quarters of a inch quicker.  I'm pretty darned impressed.

Our Rating:

+ Flared opening assists in retrieval / reholstering weapon. + Slim profile of holster takes advantage of slim 1911 for a very flat profile, comparable to a pancake holster. + Clips are easy to manipulate with one hand/no looking, unlike really stiff metal clips.  They are also interchangeable with other CT clips. + Hardware shows no sign of coming loose - threaded fasteners are built into leather + Interchangeability of spare bodies allows for consistency in carrying and training with other guns, other minotaur bodys go for $38.00 from CT

- While boasting modularity with other kydex bodies, the hardware doesn't make that conversion a quick process.  The screws require a hex key, and downward pressure must be applied to compress rubber bushings for disassembly.  Not a snap-and-go process but the overall durability and high integrity of the platform will remain true.

Mechanix M-Pact Gloves

Mechanix-MPact-Gloves-01.jpg

Mechanix-MPact-Gloves-01

Every shooting enthusiast should have a pair of gloves, for safety as well as comfort.  Some gloves have even been designed with shooting mechanics in mind, which not only assists in a positive grip but absorbing recoil as well.  And then there's winter, where you would be crazy to shoot without gloves on... especially if it is below zero and you are wrapping your mits around an all-steel frame pistol.  Brr!

With all the tactical clothing brands out there, sometimes you just don't know what you want until you see someone else wearing Mechanix MPact Glovesit.  I saw a youtube video on the Military Arms Channel with the host wearing the M-Pact gloves, and it convinced me to give them a try.  I purchased them online from Full Source, although you could probably find them locally since Mechanix is a fairly popular glove brand... I could only find the actual mechanic/automotive styles around me.  The company mistakenly sent me another pair of a different style (and different size) with another customer's billing information, so I just forwarded the package onto its correct destination and Full Source gratefully credited me back for the shipping costs.

Anyways, back to the gloves... they're really nice.  I find that they are not as sensitive / dexterous as other competitors who focus on shooting, such as the PIG full dexterity tactical glove from SKD tactical.  But I kind of wanted something a bit more robust but still light enough to load mags, manipulate controls, etc.  They have a rubberized pad over three knuckles that run down your three non-shooting fingers, which looks very attractive and almost skeletal, yet I haven't found a purpose for them.  Maybe backhanding the person who muzzles you at the range? The rubber is attached through "sonic welding" which is absolutely a marketing buzzword because my right glove already has separation between the fabric and the rubber in one spot.  Nothing some crazy glue didn't solve.

The index finger, thumb, and top-of-the-palm have a layer of texture patches which assist in gripping, they work okay when wet but exceptionally.  There are two pads sewn inside the glove for the remainer of the palm which do absorb recoil very well.  Makes the snappier pistol calibers less stingy after a few mags for sure.

Would I buy these again if I had to?  Sure, but I'd take a closer look at the competition.  Does the pair I already own have a permanent home in my range bag?  Absolutely, as long as they still hold up.

- Grip texture on inside of glove is sparce and very minimal to give that "second skin"effect in regards to thickness, and is adequate but not extremely tacky. - Fingers (index and thumb) are a big thick for reloading smaller calibers into mags.  Not designed exclusively for reloading .22 lr into mags but I found it almost impossible to accomplish without taking a glove off - Rubber part already started to come detached from fabric, but after a year of moderate use.

Parabellum Armament AK-Adaptive Rail System - AKARS

Parabellum Armament AK-Adaptive Rail System - AKARS 1

By Ryan Cross

One of the biggest differences I’ve found from an owner’s standpoint, between the AK variant rifle and its American rival the AR-15, is the availability of mounting options for scopes, red dot sights, or reflex optics. A simple Google Image search for optic mounted AK platforms would result in dozens of aftermarket railed forend (in front of the rear sight), or alternatively with an offset rail that mounts to the side of the receiver (if your rifle has the appropriate hardware already installed) that hovers the mount just above the dust cover. I was not very interested in pursuing either of these options for this particular Romanian WASR-10 with traditional wood furniture. In fact, after sanding and refinishing the wood of both the stock and the handguard, I was keen on keeping them. On my first outing with the firearm, I gave my jaw quite the jarring when using the iron sights, for which I am blaming my stylish but non-ergonomic corrective lenses. Must be why the ruskies always hip fired their AK’s in the 007 movies, no?

I was at a crossroads. I have quite a few cheap red dot sights laying around with no home. I wanted to shoot the WASR-10 accurately and more efficiently (sans the black eye). So, invest in an aluminum picatinny railed handguard and remove the rustic wood I was so fond of? Or use a side mount that would never truly be concentric with the bore, and also add bulk to the rifle. I’m not the strictest purist out there, but wanted a happy medium between a functional and effective mount for an optic and keeping the rifle as traditional as possible.Parabellum Armament AK-Adaptive Rail System - AKARS 2

My search quickly lead me to the AKARS system by Parabellum Armament. My initial positive impressions were that I could mount a red dot sight right on the dust cover with a good 6-8 inches of eye relief, with no permanent modifications to the gun. The last thing I need is another project gun and another dedicated drawer to extra parts. The install was moderately easy, and I sure am happy with the results. Good groups, repeatable zero, doesn’t interfere with cleaning, and more importantly I can use a better cheek weld. Just because your rifle has been battle-proven, doesn’t mean your face has to look like its been in a battle as well!

FNBs Key Features:

  • Installs with no permanent modifications to your rifle.
  • Aligns better with bore than side mounts.
  • Adjusts to different tolerances of AK type firearms, via a sliding rear mounting block on the dust cover that interfaces with the rail via two pins.

  • MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail
  • Integral rear sight notch (non-adjustable)
  • Enables lower ⅓ cowitness with micro red dot sights
  • Made in USA

Key Benefits:

  • Repeatable zero when rail is swung up/dust cover is removed for maintenance
  • Reduces or Eliminates ‘Dust Cover Wobble’
  • New Dust cover included is stronger steel than original

What other aesthetic options or finishes are available?  Evil Black Only

Our Rating + Excellent fit on test rifle, Romanian Wasr-10 + Included dust cover is thicker, better quality than the original + Picatinny slots are T-marked for repeatable mounting position + Much prefered mounting position as opposed to forward / railed forend position + Did not lose zero after repeated firing/opening & closing of dust cover + More accurate and convenient than side rail / dogleg option

- Installation was pretty difficult, only because of tension on test rifle’s rear sight leaf spring, took approximately 45 minutes for my install without a vise or press. - The newer AKARS’ rear sight is a ‘U’ notch, and is a bitter wide for my liking/precision use of irons. - Price is a bit stiff for two pieces of metal, but such is the hobby we chose! - Slight eyesore of Parabellum Armament / Rail system name printed on the side of rail.

FrogLube CLP Lubricant

FrogLube CLP

By Ryan Cross

Firearms Insider Reviews – 8 Key Points

Claim to Fame The World’s Only Complete ‘Green’ Weapons Care System. USDA Certified Bio-Based Product. Eliminates Residue. Non-Flammable. Non-Toxic. Improves Accuracy. Developed by former and active duty U.S. Navy SEALs.

Target Market All Gun Owners High round-count shooters

FNBs (Features & Benefits) Froglube CLP is available in liquid, paste or cloth wipes in multiple volume quantities.

From product website: “FrogLube is a heavy specific gravity “food grade” mixture that seeps deep into the micro spaces of the metal and acts as if to ‘season’  the surface of the bore, any friction points and all areas treated with the lube. Once treated, fouling particles resist bonding to metal surfaces;  instead, they easily wipe away or brush off the surface. This also applies to other loose fouling particles such as dirt, dust and sand.  FrogLube does not film, nor is it a coating. Instead it is a treatment that is absorbed throughout the firearm.  It is water insoluble and will repel water and resist corrosion.”

Solvent variety in spray bottle is also available, but CLP works pretty well in breaking up carbon if applied, left to set for approximately 15mins, and then wiped off.

Key Benefits Makes firearms more accurate (through decrease friction and mechanical wear). Cleans, Lubricates and Prevents Rust (CLP) by embedding deep into the metal’s pores.FrogLube Wipes Repels water, dirt, and other particulates. Does not require baking or special preparation of surface, but heated metal will accept      the ‘Frog Love’ better. Harmless to plastic and rubber. Wipes can be cut into smaller squares and used as bore patches.

What others are saying? “Simply the best product you can buy. FrogLube eliminates all lubrication related problems. Clean up is a breeze. All of my customer are amazed with their firearms after I do a FrogLube application. It is the only lubrication product I recommend.”         - Premier Shooting LLC

“As long as they keep making this stuff, and as long as they don’t change the formula, and as long as it keeps working, I’ll keep using FrogLube.” - www.guntorturetests.com

Price point (MSRP versus actual retail) MSRP: Liquid 4 oz. bottle $19.00, Paste 4 oz. jar $12.00, Wipes 5 pack $8.99, Solvent Spray bottle $34.00, Complete set available at $49.99

I need it now! Availability  Dealer Map Official FrogShop Promised Land Firearms

Our Rating – I really enjoy Froglube as an addition to my cleaning kit. The liquid is great for internals and moving parts: just a few drops on the bolt and work the action a few times, and it’s covered. It is only a little more expensive per ounce than other products, but then again you only need to use small amounts so it will last you longer and it's also not a great substitute for toothpaste, trust me.

+ Liquid form doesn’t evaporate like other lubes + Viscosity of liquid form is just right, not too thick to gum up moving parts and not too thin to run all over the place + A little bit goes along way, it won’t evaporate like other lubes + Wipes are great for treating barrels (especially bead blasted stainless steel or other finishes that need rust protection) or cut into smaller square patches, making bore cleaning a snap. + Smells and tastes like wintergreen flavored gum, it’s quite pleasant actually.

What you you think?

I was in need of a low-profile red dot sight to mount to a .22lr pistol.  I did not want to enter the price points of Trijicon, RMR, Burris FastFire, etc.  It comes with a small screwdriver for adjusting, and a wheel that shows direction or rotation for adjustment of windage and elevation.  It appeared to be designed to slip over the screwdriver tool as a rotation guide, but did not fit well.  This sight did get sent back to manufacturer after it failed during initial sight-in.  Under warranty, it was replaced within 1.5 months.  The replacement has faired much better and has held zero after 200+ rounds of 22lr.  I've seen others mount onto 12 gauge shotguns, but I do not yet have the confidence it will withstand the recoil forces beyond the .22 family.
