FourSevens Quark X AA2 Tactical Review

TJG-FourSevens-Quark-Main.jpg

FourSevens Quark

The FourSevens Quark X AA2 Tactical (what a mouthful!) is a great light. I chose this light for its relative compactness, its output, and the common battery it uses. Using the AA battery allows it to be much thinner than many other “EDC” lights. Most 123 battery lights are 1 inch in diameter. The Quark AA2 is only .86 inch in diameter. It is relatively close in dimensions to the classic Mini-Mag light, FourSevens vs MiniMagbut with so many more features. This allows you to carry it clipped to the inside of a pocket with much less noticeable bulk. Plus, I use my light so much, that I am thankful for the use of common, relatively inexpensive batteries. The lengthy name can be decoded for easy identification of the lights function. “Quark” is the actual model name. The “X” denotes that is the brighter version of that particular model. The “AA” is the battery used and the “2” is the number of that battery. The “Tactical” lets you know what the user interface is like. There are two interfaces, “Pro” and “Tactical”.  The Pro cycles through each of the modes by simply soft-pressing the tail cap switch. The Tactical is programmable. It only has two readily available modes, but those two modes can set to whatever you want. The way to switch between them is by either loosening or tightening the bezel. As an example, you can set it up as Loose = Max and Tight = Strobe. For such a compact light running off of AA batteries, it has an amazing output. FourSevens advertises 280 lumens on this X model. The standard(non-X) is advertised at 205 lumens. With my normal use, this light seems to have a pretty good runtime. I usually keep it on High, which is 115 lumens, and I seem to rarely change the batteries. The Tactical has a momentary/constant switch. To use the momentary, you soft press the switch. To make it constant on, you just press the switch all the way in. You can also swap the head and tail cap, which lets you choose if you want the clip to carry it head-up or head-down. I had to send my light back to the factory for repair, because I accidentally got water inside of the tube and the head malfunctioned. This was entirely my fault, and not a faulty seal, but FourSevens fixed it free of charge. My only ding against them would be that I didn’t get any sort of ETA when I returned it. Six weeks doesn’t seem like a terribly long time to wait, but when you have no clue how long it will be, that seems like an eternity.

Remington 1100 20ga. Shotgun

remington1100

Every hunter has one firearm with the most sentimental value. It's probably one of the first they've ever had, and is reliable without question.  For me, this would be my Remington Model 1100 in 20 gauge.  Given to me many years ago by a close family friend and role model in all things outdoorsman, this is the shotgun with which I've learned to hunt upland game birds and shoot skeet.  Over a whole decade later it's still my favorite shotgun for the range or in the field.

I'm not an extraordinary shot or anything, but I can claim with this firearm I can get double and even triple consecutive hits on clay pigeons and quail. The lightweight and soft recoil of 20 gauge plus the gas operated recoil system make this shotgun a dream.

The blued image has held up over the past 10+ years flawlessly, and the engraving on the receiver and bolt add to the classy aesthetic of the shotgun.  This will be one of the finest heirlooms I pass on to my future kin.

What others are saying? "Another high point of the 1100 gas operation is reduced recoil. This gun will be much more enjoyable to shoot than your mule-kicking Mossberg. Especially since it is a lighter gauge. But, don't let that fool you. The 20 gauge is plenty of gun for anything from geese to doves and deer to pigs. In fact, I like the way it puts the smackdown on a a gobbler with heavier loads or gracefully knocks a quail down with field loads. Great all-round gauge. " - fieldandstream.com review

Concealment Solutions Black Mamba CE Review

TJG-Black-Mamba-Main.jpg

TJG Black Mamba Main

Concealment Solutions is a small company located in Provo, Utah run by an excellent guy named Jason Christensen. The Black Mamba CE is a hybrid Kydex/leather, inside-the-waistband holster. There are two models of the Black Mamba, the original and CE. The CE offers the “combat” cut leather that keeps you from grabbing the holster at the same time as the gun, which is a great TJG Black Mamba Sight Groovefeature at only a $5 increase. There are tons of models available, but if you are local to the Provo area Jason will take the time to custom fit any gun he doesn’t have a mold for. I purchased my Black Mamba for the Glock 26 I was carrying at the time. When I put it on, I immediately knew it was the perfect holster for me. I had previously been carrying in an all Kydex IWB holster that held the pistol straight up and entirely too high with no adjustments, which made even the subcompact Glock difficult to conceal, sometimes. Once I got my Mamba adjusted, I realized I could conceal even a full-size pistol. So much so, that I traded my TJG Black Mamba Clipsubcompact Glock 26 for a compact Glock 19. One of the great features of this holster is the incredible range of adjustability. On either side of the Kydex shell, in the leather, there are two tuckable clips mounted. Each clip has the option of being moved up or down by unscrewing the hardware and moving it to a different hole. This allows you to change the depth of the pistol in your waistband and, also, the cant of the grip, allowing you to carry it just the way you want it. The Kydex shell has a molded-in sight channel that is plenty large for any different sights you want to put on your pistol. There is a flare at the top that helps you guide the pistol back in. There is also a flare at the bottom, where the rail is, that I can only assume is to reduce the risk of the rail catching on the Kydex on the way out. Jason provides excellent customer service and answers emails very promptly. I would(and do) recommend the Black Mamba to anyone and everyone that needs a great concealment holster.

Comp-Tac Single Magazine Pouch Review

Comp-Tac Mag Pouch 1

The Comp-Tac Single Magazine Pouch is a sturdy, well made magazine carrier. It is made of a single piece of thick Kydex and has a heavy-duty belt clip. The belt clip is specific to the size of your belt, so you will choose 1.25”, 1.5” and 1.75” depending on the size of Com-Tac Mag pouch on beltbelt you carry with. The mag carrier has adjustable retention by a screw that you tighten with stiff rubber between the two sides of the Kydex and adjusts using a supplied Allen key. You can also choose to purchase your carrier for left-handed or right-handed and bullets-forward or bullets backwards carry. The mag pouch carries the magazine very close to your body, so it does not print by protruding outward. One thing that bothers me about it, is that it carries the mag incredibly high. This could be an advantage for competition, but in carry, I find it tends to print at the baseplate. Other than that, this is a great carrier.

Spyderco Persistence Review

Spyderco pic 1

The Spyderco Persistence is the second smallest knife in Spyderco’s budget folder line.  It’s got a blade length of 2.75” blade and an overall length of 6.8” while open.  It has a 4-way clip that can be positioned for left or right-handed carry and tip-up or tip-down carry.  The blade has a very large hole positioned just right for quick opening. The G-10 grips and skeletonized liner keeps the knife relatively light.  The blade was very sharp out of the box and seemed to keep a good edge for a while. The width of the Spyderco knife helps fill your hand very nicely and is easy to control. The knife locks with a liner-lock that is easily released with the thumb of your hand and (with care) allows you to close it one-handed. This is a great, inexpensive knife that I would recommend to anyone.

ATAC A1

ATAC A1

I was in the market for not just an EDC (every day carry) flashlight, but something that would also come in handy during a night time home invasion.  You see, I'm not into weapon mounted lights on my home defense handgun.  I know there are a lot of great arguments out there to have one on your gun, but I don't want to point the muzzle of my weapon at something/someone that I don't intend to shoot.  With a weapon mounted light, that is a scenario that does happen.

After reading a lot of reviews and doing some homework of my own, I decided to purchase the 5.11 Tactical ATAC A1 flashlight.  5.11 took the time to design this light with feedback from law enforcement officers and tactical operators to bring to the market a product of reliability, durability and utility.  The ATAC A1 uses a smart Cree LED bulb to throw 103 lumens on high/strobe up to 50 minutes or 28 hours on low (11 lumens) from 1 AA battery.  The tail cap switch of the flashlight allows you to move from high, low or strobe with no auditory sound.  In addition, the ATAC A1 also allows you to do a momentary on for a quick blast of light.

Last but not least, I truly am a fan of the pocket clip attached to this flashlight.  I know that sounds weird, but I hate when I'm trying to pull my pocket knife out and the clip gets stuck on my pants.  The pocket clip on this flashlight is smooth and has not yet gotten caught on any of my pants. Taurus PT 1911

Sam PT 1911

This firearm is slightly torn, torn between timeless design, and modern affordable production. On the one hand, you have a pure American classic firearm in the 1911 designed by none other than John Moses Browning and put into service in 1911. On the other Sam PT 1911 pic 2hand you have Taurus, a company that has been successful by offering cheaper alternatives to more expensive designs offered by other companies. Not to say they don’t make quality firearms, but suffice to say they are not always the most independent when it comes to design. As far as inspiration goes, they lead the way with the PT 1911 pistol. Taurus managed to cram a lot of features into a well-fitted and finished firearm that would normally go for twice as much money. A majority of people agrees that the value in this gun is tremendous, however there are some naysayers. You can find video reviews and blooper vids on youtube showing misfeeds and stove pipes. That’s all fine and dandy, but even the highest end 1911’s can sometimes have growing pains.

I took the plunge on this gun and have not regretted it one bit. It has been just as, if not more reliable than guns twice its price point. Granted if you’re a collector, none of this is all too impressive. The beautiful scalloped cocking serrations of an S&W E-Series, or the almost hand shredding checkering of a Springfield Armory TRP may draw you in more. However, for the budget conscious, or the person who simply wants a 1911 to fill that void, this is the gun for them. It sure was for me.

930

Tactical Shotguns of yester year.  It's good to see the ol' 12 gauge staying strong, and as the popularity with module, fancy rifles has grown, the shotgun world has been becoming a little... blacker.  Rails, High Capacity clip-o-zines, flesh-eating muzzle devices... no this isn't one of those shotguns.  The Mossberg 930 is pretty conventional by todays high-speed-low-drag, 'gotta have 1913 rail all over the place' standards.  And thank the Lord for that, because this gun is really meant to be put to work.  Law Enforcement, Military, and recreational competition is where the 930 shines due to its durability and reliability.

Jerry-Miculek1It's actually a 3-Gunner fan favorite, with more than a few famous shooters (ahem - Jerry Miculek, Lena Miculek, Ryan Flannigan) having signature models.  Seriously, check out Jerry's 930 with the huge magazine tube and gnarly muzzle compensator, what a beast!  Buying a 3-Gun platform in 930 isn't painless though, as availability is real tough, but for the price it still comes way lower than a Benelli.  Luckily it's Mossberg, and that means aftermarket availability is out there.  Not as much as the 500 but its still out there.  Finding a 22"-24" is the hardest part, since these come with an 18" and everyone's looking for a longer barrel so they can get a longer mag tube as well.  I'm still searching.  But in-between matches, its a great range beast, and will definitely fit a home defense role.

The only real issue that floats around out in the community is the anemic ejection of low-brass and inexpensive shells right out of the box.  Some claim they never had the issue, other's swear by it.  I did have a few shells get caught in the action at first.  But I managed to find some winchester bulk that was a bit bolder at 1200fps, and still mixed in some 3" old game loads for about 2-300 rounds.  It shoots the cheap stuff just fine now.

Surefire G2ZX Combatlight

surefire-G2ZX-Combatlight.jpg

 surefire G2ZX Combatlight

I got this Surefire G2ZX Combat light in about a month and a half ago, I use it on a daily basis as part of my EDC, at first I was worried it was going to be too big for my pockets because I was used to an old E2D defender I’ve used since my first deployment in Iraq in 2006…But thats not an issue, fits perfectly, which leads me to why I chose Surefire over a competitor.  Surefire make solid products, but yes sometimes companies who make great products get so proud of them that they price themselves right out of business.  I think this was becoming true for Surefire and they had the due diligence to see it and came out with a new line of awesome polymer bodied lights that also come with increased battery life, more powerful LED lamps with increased lumens over the exact same lights they had a couple of years ago.  So thats enough for my rant, here are the specs and first impressions I have with this light.

The G2ZX Combatlight takes 2 cr123A lithium batteries, has a powerful 320 lumens with a 2.5 hour solid runtime and comes with a rubber ring for using the “Surefire” method when shooting a handgun in low light (which is my preference and found it works VERY well for maintaining a good grip on the light in your non-shooting hand, while also using that hand as support for the handgun.  Momentary pressure switch, with an option to turn the rear section for constant on.  It also comes with a steel lanyard ring and black lanyard.  The lamp head is made from Surefire's quality aluminum, and the rest of the body is very high strength polymer.  Overall length is 5.2 inches, weight is 4.3 OZ.  Very bright!  I shined it across a field and could see the trees pretty clear that were about 150 yards away! (and I have poor eyesight)  This is a great light, I would recommend it for anyone including Military, police, fire & rescue, and the everyday CCW holder. REMEMBER even if you are “just a ccw” holder, its very important to have a light.  Don’t be that boot who gets into a sticky situation where you cannot clearly see or identify your target.. it may mean your life, the life of a loved one or land you in the slammer if you take a bad shot.

The controls work well and are mostly convenient. It has an ambidextrous safety which is under my thumb and is kind of awkward to take on/off. There is also a carbine kit for it, you unscrew the barrel and remove the hand grip. Replacing both with a 16” barrel and a stocked grip assembly. The main issue with this kit is poor availability and it is priced the same as the original pistol.

Blackhawk Hellstorm S.O.L.A.G. Gloves

Blackhawk Hellstorm S.O.L.A.G. Gloves ( Special Operations Light Assault Gloves ), as the name implies, these gloves were designed for whatever you can throw at them.  I have put my set through the ringer and they still look and perform as good as the day I got them.  If you read through some of the reviews, you will find that people often complain about the sizing (finger length).  If you are truly interested in picking up a pair of these gloves, do yourself a favor and go to Blackhawks website and check out the sizing chart. I did just that and made sure that I was buying the right size the first time around.  Should you have a thick hand, you can adjust the straps on the wrist and top of the glove to loosen or tighten them up.

Sig Sauer P226 Enhanced Elite 9MM

Sig 2

There is not much to say when it comes to Sig Sauer firearms. They have a reputation for fit and finish that comes from over a hundred years in the firearms manufacturing business. Regardless of the trim level of my gun, I am reviewing a gun that is part of theSig 3 p226 family of pistols. This pistol design is thirty years old and is still going strong with the new x5 competition models fetching  $2000 plus pricetags. That being said, it is a trusted sidearm for organizations such as the U.S. Secret Service and Navy Seals here in America, as well as police and Special Forces military groups in over two dozen countries world wide.

Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack Review

Fatboy Versipack Main

Maxpedition’s Fatboy Versipack is a high-quality, heavy-duty EDC shoulder bag. I decided to purchase mine one day when, on my walk from my car to the office, I dropped every single thing I was trying to carry in that day. It has many pockets, pouches and compartments to accommodate an endless variety of items. There is a wide, well padded shoulder strap to keep it from digging into your shoulder when you’re carrying it. It’s main pocket is big enough to carry my Kindle Fire HD tablet and a hybrid IWB holster (for when I’m not wearing it), along with a few other odds and ends. This compartment has a nylon cinch-sack type top thatFatboy Versipack Pocket keeps debris out. Behind the main compartment is a large, zippered pocket. This pocket is to store a handgun separate from the other contents of the bag. It has the soft side of hook-and-loop on it for attachment for holsters. Maxpedition sells a universal holster for just this task and another called the SNEAK that allows you to carry a spare mag alongside the pistol. It is large enough to hold a mid-sized handgun, like a Glock 19. In front of the main pocket is a smaller, zippered pouch that is the perfect size to carry a smaller notepad and more miscellaneous items. On one side, there is a magazine holder with a large hook-and-loop flap that has plenty of coverage to adjust to many different size magazines. The other side has a zippered pouch that is a little larger than the magazine pouch, which could probably hold at least 2 double-stack mags. The outside of this pouch has MOLLE webbing to attach even more gear. On the shoulder strap, there is a large buckle that allows you to easily put the pack on or take it off. Just below the buckle is a pouch with a buckled flap that is the perfect size for a large multi-tool with a pen sleeve on either side of this pouch. On the end of the shoulder strap that faces the rear, there is a HK style hook that can be used to hang keys or any other small tools. There are many color options, left and right handed versions and a model that replaces the side magazine pouch with a water bottle holder. The Fatboy Versipack is a very durable pack that I doubt I will ever wear out.

Leatherman Wave Review

Leatherman Wave Tools

The Leatherman Wave is considered a full-size multi-tool, but at 4” overall length when closed, it’s more of a medium tool. It is Leatherman’s most popular tool, and I can see why. I chose it based on the types of tools that it comes with. The pliers are good and they have wire cutters and a hard-wire cutter in the pivot of the pliers. The hard-wire cutters help with cutting thick wire or smaller nails without damaging the finer wire cutters. I would personally prefer replaceable wire cutters, but these are permanent. Leatherman Wave pt 2There is a very good can opener that doubles as a bottle opener. At the base of the can opener, there is a somewhat sharpened “V” that is used for stripping wire. One of the selling points for me was the screwdriver bit holder. The holder uses a full-size bit, but what Leatherman did was shave off the sides to slim down the bit. They will fit into a full ¼” bit driver. The bit supplied is reversible with a Philips on one side and a flat-head on the other. Other bits are available for purchase. The scissors are decent, but could be better if they were slightly longer. There is also a small bit holder that holds a proprietary precision screwdriver. It is perfect for those fine screws on eyeglasses and is reversible for Phillips and flat-head. The last interior tool is a large flat-head driver that can double as a light-duty pry-bar. Another large selling point for me was the accessibility of the knives, saw and file from the outside, while the tool is closed. The knives came from the factory very sharp and I have yet to need to sharpen them. Granted, I don’t use the blades very often, as also carry a pocket knife that I will usually use first. One feature I appreciate is that the Wave has separate straight and serrated Leathermanblades. I rarely use a serrated blade, so I prefer it being separate.  However with that being said, the serrations are great. They aren’t the sharp/pointy serrations you usually see, but more of a smooth serration that doesn't snag on rope and fabric. There is a very good wood saw that can shred through small branches rather quickly. The wood/metal file is very handy and on the reverse of it is a fine, diamond-coated file. After owning this tool for over a year and a half, I would definitely recommend it to anyone. There are a few accessories I would suggest getting alongside the tool. It comes with a MOLLE pouch(for the black) or a belt pouch(for the silver) that has room for spare bits. You can purchase a 40-piece bit set that contains more Phillips, flat-head, hex and even Torx driver heads. I also recommend the bit extender. It slips into the bit holder and extends your driver 3.25 inches and allows you to use any full-size, ¼” driver bit. One last note is that I just, upon writing this review, found out that there is a hidden (very well hidden) lanyard loop inside one of the handles. I never knew it was there, but it is really easy to deploy if you want it, but out of the way if you don’t.

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mm FFP

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mm I must admit, I'm quickly becoming a "Vortex Fanboy."  It's not difficult, when a company puts something out there that takes the market by storm and genuinely gets the community talking.  I hear the same story whenever I ask the guy behind the counter about them:  "I know quite a few guys who, after looking through a Vortex or trying a buddy's, came in and swapped out their Nightforce glass for one."  Now I'm not much of an optics snob, but my collection of glass has seen some nice upgrades in the last year.  Finding out that as I'm willing to spend more on frivolous bolt-ons that don't really make my groups any tighter, a nicer optic will help in leaps and bounds.

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mm

I had a rifle length AR-15 build that used to host an entry level Leupold VX-1 that was 3-9, but I decided to slap in onto my father's trusty 40 year old winchester deer gun instead.  I had wanted this build to be a range/coyote/3-Gun platform, which is asking alot in the optics department.  I looked at Trijicon ACOGs and the new VCOG, but I felt there wasn't enough versatility with those. There are plenty of 1-4x or 1-6x scopes that could fit that bill, but I like giving my eyes all the help they can get.  Additionally, all those have reticles that are so frackin' tiny, I need a new prescription  just to read the hashmarks.  So one day I popped into a Sportsmans Warehouse and the counter jockey put this vortex in my hands.

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32mmFirst Focal Plane (FFP) was the ticket I was looking for.  A scope that dials down to 2.5x for close range cardboard or fur works well, and the 10x power is just enough for 100-300 yard shooting.  Vortex also offers a 2.5-10x44 cheaper flavor, but without a parallax adjustment or illuminated reticle...  all things I felt were standards I needed, as I've grown accustomed to them on another Viper I have on my bolt rifle.   It's also a nice balanced weight at just over 18 oz and the smaller bell gives alittle more flexibilty in the rings department.  I still had a hell of a time finding 30mm rings high enough to make a flattop rail / A2 buttstock work, but I ended up ordering a Burris PEPR and it fit the bill.

Zeroing at the range: Very enjoyable.  Usually zeroing an optic in can be tedious, frustrating, and pricey on the round count. I did a preliminary laser boresighting the night before, but it was just barely on paper at 50 yards.  A couple rounds of adjustment back at the 100 yard bench and it was right where it needed to be.  I shot a few mags at 2.5x at 20 yards, trying to best simulate competition conditions.  Went well, quickly transitioning to 6-10x on the fly is tough because the magnification ring is snug, which isn't a bad thing.  I threw on a quick lever which made it easier (if Vortex included this in the package, I would be extremely pleased as coughing up another $50-60 for a CNC'd two piece ring is tough to swallow.

The scope does comes with an inspection certificate, CR2032 battery, a bikini scope cover, cleaning cloth, CRS zero stop shims, allen wrench, manuals, and a Vortex pin.  The other Viper scope I own with a 50mm objective came with a sun shade.  I really wish this did as well, but no luck! Maybe I'll pick up a killflash scope cap one of these days.
